“Song of the Turtle”
I think the poem “Song of the Turtle” is from the perspective of any animal that was here before humans. This poem is a metaphor for how man destroyed this world and took so many things away from nature. From the perspective of a lot of animals, like the turtle, their freedom vanished because we now over ruled, scared away, and hunted most animals. I also think one of the themes in this poem is freedom, because almost everyone wants freedom, and how would you feel having that taken away?
Song of the Turtle
This poem, written by Ghanaian people, is from the perspective of a turtle. He is telling how turtles’ lives are changed when man appeared. This poem is also showing a metaphor of invasion like how the Aztecs where invaded by Cortez. It is also a metaphor of how man has destroyed nature. Finally, this was probably written as a projection, on to a turtle, by the Ghanaians to show how they felt about being invaded by the white man and then enslaved.
Song of the Turtle
The Song of the Turtle represents how man came and destroyed every original creation that was made on this planet. I think the Turtle symbolizes wisdom and is expressing its concern for Earth’s well being and that if we don’t change our style of living now, our next generation will live in harsh conditions. The Turtle also speaks for all animals and says that they are no longer free, but trapped within boundary lines, instead of running wild, how they were supposed to be. Now, as a result of our selfishness, there are children wandering alone among the streets, no home or belongings and among these orphans are stray animals that have never experienced the warmth and comfort of a welcoming environment. The Turtle is a metaphor as well for God, watching and surveying the situation, thinking of ways to make it better, without lifting a finger.

Song of the Turtle
The Song of the Turtle shows from the perspective of a turtle that people came and destroyed the turtle’s homes and families. It shows how man ruined the turtle’s way of life, forcing them to change. In the beginning of the poem it says how the turtle’s life was fine and happy until “Man broke into our forest” and there freedom “vanished”. It also is like how the Ghanaians were enslaved by the white men. It is a song that can be easy compared to many situations.
Song of the Turtle
We lived in freedom
Be for man appeared
Our world was undisturbed
One day following the other joyfully
Dissent was never heard
The man broke into our forest
With cunning and belligerence
He pursued us
With greed and envy
Our freedom vanished
“Gratitude for life in all its forms. A responsibility to others as well as to ourselves. A quiet appreciation for the ironies of life. It reminds me to be grateful for all that I have, and to laugh along with the universe at the ridiculous events in my life.”

This is happening more and more every day. We waste things right and left and don’t even give it a thought. It’s not just certain people, like movie stars living in huge mansions, but ordinary people such as you and me. This is destroy animals habitats and eventually, like in the movie Walle will be inhabitable for even humans. Its scary to think about but its true.
The Song of the Turtle
We lived in freedom
Before man appeared
Our world was undisturbed
One day followed the other joyfully
Dissent was never heard
Then man broke into our forest
With cunning and belligerence
He pursued us
With greed and envy
Our freedom vanished
1. The poem is told from the turtle’s point of view.
2. It is a metaphor for every other ancient culture and how the have been destroyed by other civilizations. (Indians, Aztecs)
3. Since this song is African it tells how the Europeans came and took them as slaves, “Our freedom vanished”
4. This also relates to the fact that the turtle was one of the pre-historic animals and when man came into existence they killed the turtles for their shells and cut down the trees.
5. This song can also be one of those fables that has a moral and the moral in this poem would be to never treat other creatures badly for your personal gain. If you look at what mankind has done to other animals and nature then you will realize how much we have screwed up in existence, we have cut down the trees, we have driven several animals to the point of extinction for the sake of comfort instead of letting Mother Nature take her time.
6. This is a subtle hint that while all of our monuments and buildings and cities may seem like an accomplishment to us they are a curse to the rest of the world.
7. Most writings say that we made use of the forest and have done a good thing for the world but if you look at nature it contains the most beautiful things on Earth, not a man made building.
8. The poem actually shows humans in a negative light “They broke into our forest” and “With cunning and belligerence shows that when man came in with the bulldozers and backhoes that we were greedy and destroyed many innocent animals’ lives rather than help the world.
9. “Dissent was never heard” “Then man broke into our forest” These to statements back up my opinions that we destroyed everything for OUR convenience and to fix OUR problems. I know that on the food chain we are the most powerful but that doesn’t give us the privilege to abuse it and in these past centuries we’ve done nothing but abuse our power and terminate nature.
10. Even this simple poem shows how many unforgivable crimes man has committed in this millennia and how no matter what we do to make amends nature has no reasons to ever forgive us but humans don’t care that we have befouled the Earth. Pollution is our fault and would not have happened if we had not destroyed nature but humans don’t even care. They say that we had every right to take over the Earth but in reality we didn’t. I believe that we should have left more of nature the way it was and then several animals would have been spared there homes.
“Song of the Turtle”
We lived in freedom
Before man appeared:
Our world was undisturbed,
One day followed the other joyfully.
Dissent was never heard.
Then man broke into our forest,
With cunning and belligerence.
He pursued us
With greed and envy:
Our freedom vanished.
I believe that this poem is like how our world came to be. First, all of the people lived in peace and freedom, then let’s say, Hernan Cortez came and betrayed us all and ruined our freedom. It was like there were two sides: the good men of the world and the men in the world who just wanted to have power and control. In ancient Ghana everybody was family and they all had freedom, but over time when a new world was created, when war, selfishness, and greed came, our freedom was taken away. Betrayal and selfishness took over our freedom, cooperation, and family, and that is what this poem states.
Song of the Turtle
1. The name of the poem is Song of the Turtle and it is an old ancient Ghana poem.
2. Ancient poems were handed down orally.
3. The poem has beautiful words like freedom, undisturbed.
4. The themes in this poem are freedom, and man ruining nature.
5. It is a metaphor to how the Ghanaian people lived perfectly and how now there are enemies and separate families.
The lines in Song of the Turtle mean that the turtle is talking about how he was peaceful until man came into the world. It could also be any animal, that has not benefited from man, saying the poem.
The song of the turtle
in my opinion song of the turtle is about how man (an unknown creature to them) came into there world where they lived and died peacefully and caused chaos in there world and were not able to fight back in the line “with greed and envy” shows that they didn’t think kindly of them when they had to finally adapt to the causes that man had caused. It is what it is but it didn’t have to be man could have never come and all would be peaceful that is what they are trying to say in this poem.
DETAIALS IN THE WRITNG:
1. This poem shows that they would live in peace if the man didn’t show
2. It shows that man came out of greed and for his own purposes
3. He came with no other reason but selfish ones
4. They showed no mercy when coming in there land
Song of the Turtle
The song of the turtle is a poem by ancient Ghanaians that is based off of a turtle and it is in the turtle’s point of view.
We lived in freedom
Before man appeared
Our world was undisturbed
Dissent was never heard
Then man broke in to our forest
With cunning and belligerence
He pursued us
With greed and envy
Our freedom vanished
The poem really symbolizes life in ancient times almost every where in the world. They are symbolizing how the slaves from Africa were token away from there homeland. Also, how the Aztecs were taken over by Cortez and the Spaniards.
The line “then man broke into our forest” It shows that humans do not care for other people and animals land, that we think we could do what ever we want. People think that we can take over the turtle world or kill all of the whales in the ocean. No matter what we think we could take over the whole world.
