In our last story, Up Close Chuck Close, we studied art and the life of an amazing man. In the following post I would like you to write a one paragraph response to literature, answering one of the following questions. Instructions Create your essay on a word document, then cut and paste it into the blog. Make sure you create a statement for your topic sentence. Support your statement with 3 concrete details from the stories we read. Finally, using sequence words compose a concluding sentence.

  1. What does “putting rocks in my shoes” mean?

  2. What kind of art is your favorite (Hyper-realistic, abstract, or conceptual), and why?

  3. How did Chuck close solve the problem of getting around his huge canvases?

  4. Describe the process of the art lesson Mr. Africano gave at the beginning of the week.

Note: Each entry is worth 5,000 A-bucks, however there will be a 500 bonus for every error found and a 500 charge for every error on your post.

My favorite part of Chuck Close, Up Close was the strategy of putting rock in his shoes. Putting rock in his shoes was creating a problem and not staying in a routine so you were never comfortable. Chuck Close said,” the greatest enemy for an artist is ease… repeating yourself once you get good at it.” Both He and I think that creating a problem makes your work better and helps you learn new concepts and ideas. That is the reason putting rocks in his shoes was my favorite part of the story.

The steps on how to do the art lesson Mr. Africano gave at the beginning of the week are as follows. First, get a piece of paper. Second, draw many scribbles on the page. Lastly color in the scribbles with paint, or color pencils etc. Those are the steps on how to do the art lesson Mr. Africano gave.

There are many types of paintings, my favorite is abstract. I like abstract because it is cool to try and find little shapes and make them into something. I also like abstract because it involves many colors (bright, dark, and right in the middle shades). Sometimes the abstract art can turn out not that good and sometimes it turns out fabulous. It depends on the color, shapes, border, and imagination to make the abstract art amazing. I like abstract because of the way it turns out and everybody’s are always different never the same.

"Putting rocks in my shoes" means making obstacles for yourself. Chuck would never repeat himself. Never making it easy for himself. He never wanted to make things to easy for himself.

Putting rocks in my shoes was a very important concept to Chuck Close. He used that metaphor to help his peers understand his goal in life. Putting rocks in my shoes means to never take the easy way out, to always be on the look out for new challenges. Chuck would always make paintings the difficult way, such as using three layers of different colors of paint on every hyper realistic painting. He would put one layer of red paint, then blue, then yellow, and then he was finished. This was a painstaking method of doing things, but it made him famous beyond compare.

The meaning “putting rocks in my shoes” means setting obstacles for yourself. Secondly, I have a lot of favorite art, but if I had to pick one style, it would have to be abstract art. First, I chose abstract art as my favorite because they have a lot shapes in them, next, because a lot of abstract paintings are colorful like a rainbow, and lastly, I chose abstract art because it is just like me- one of a kind, colorful and exciting. Chuck Close got around his big canvases by using an invention called a forklift. A forklift is a big crane-like thing that disabled people use to get around like Chuck. Chuck used it to get to spaces on his painting(s) that he could not reach and his forklift would lift him up off of the ground and allow him anywhere where he wanted to go while painting.

Abstract Art

My favorite kind of art is abstract. The first reason why I like abstract art so much is you can do what ever you want. The second reason is your picture doesn’t have to be realistic. The third reason is I like the bright colors and weird shapes. Those are the reasons I love abstract art.

Out of all the paintings on earth my favorite art is hyper realistic because I like to know what the painting means. If it’s abstract you don't know what to think about it. I like hyper realistic because the fact that it’s so realistic it looks like a photograph.

In the story “Chuck Close Up Close” Chuck Close would create obstacles for himself and call it, “Rocks in my shoes.” Chuck Close would use a forklift to get around the huge hulking canvases. He would paint abstract art, in both black and white and color. My favorite type of art is Hyper-realistic because the painting seems to come alive, and they are just beautiful. Mr. Africano gave us a lesson on abstract art, here are the steps. First you have to draw a border and draw squiggly random lines inside the border. Next you color in all the shapes that have formed, you can make whatever pattern you want. Finally you can hang up your finished work around your house. But again, this is only abstract, I love Hyper-realistic.

Putting Rocks in my Shoes

In our last story, Chuck Close, Up Close Chuck describes how the hardest thing for a painter is having painting become easy, “The greatest enemy for an artist is ease…repeating yourself once you get good at it.” So Close decides to challenges himself because he thinks “…problem-solving is highly overrated. Problem creation is much more interesting.” He says you have to back yourself in your own little corner, move away from other peoples ideas and behave as an individual.

1) To me “Rocks in my shoes” means that you’re in a challenging situation. Chuck liked having a challenge; he made it that way for himself. “Rocks in my shoes” is basically meaning that you’re walking down the street and there is a rock in your shoe and its bugging you. His example of “Rocks in my shoe” is when he was paralyzed he didn’t sit there in his studio and pout about it, he found a way to paint and be happy. He loved challenges and things that it’s a excellent fact about him.

The question I choose was putting rocks in my shoes. Putting rocks in my shoes means making challenges for yourself, the greatest enemy for an artist is ease. “He sets obstacles for himself. He calls it “putting rocks in my shoes.” Chuck Close makes obstacles to give him challenges and to have the feel of success when he accomplished his challenged or got past the obstacles.

Putting rocks in my shoes means to put obstacles in your way. Chuck Close always said “If you wait for inspiration you’ll never get anything done.” This means to go out and try something different and set a challenge for your self. It also means to go out and take a risk. Chuck Close never did the same over and over. Finally, putting rocks in my shoes means to do things other people have not tried and put obstacles in your way.

I picked “putting rocks in my shoes” because it means a lot like it means doing things that make you brave. Like in the book touching the spirit bear Cole went in the ice cold water. Martin Luther King put rocks in his shoes because he wanted the black and white to be together and that was his dream. Chuck close also put rocks in his shoes because after he was paralyzed he wanted to still paint. In the challenge they were climbing a big mountain and they knew that they could have died.

In the story Chuck Close Up Close, Chuck said he would put rocks in his shoes to make his life more interesting. During the story, I was confused about what that meant so we talked about in class. What this metaphor means is he gives himself challenges so he doesn’t have to do the same old thing over and over. An example of him “putting rocks in his shoes”, is when he was paralyzed Chuck didn’t just lie around and act like everything was impossible now that he was paralyzed. Chuck learned how to paint even with his disability, and that was a huge challenge for himself. In conclusion, Chuck Close was an amazing man that inspired people that “putting rocks in your shoes”, is actually a great thing for your life and character.

Mr. Africano gave a quick art lesson at the beginning of the week. For the art lesson we had to get a blank sheet of paper, get markers or pencils, make a border on the paper, and draw a whole bunch of squiggly lines all over the paper. After you would be done making the squiggly lines you would color each little circle or shape with a different design and color. I painted the art project on a canvas with many different color such as, green, yellow, purple, orange, red, and blue. After I finished my painting I played around with it and saw I had made the face and body of a monkey.

To me “Putting my rocks in my shoes” basically means trying to push your self to the limit. One reason Chuck Close did that is because he loved to challenge himself so he can get better and better. Also the reason he did that is because he always had to better than he was a painting ago.

Putting rocks in my shoes is a metaphor for creating obstacles. Chuck Close did this because he says that an artist’s greatest enemy is ease. Creating obstacles for himself keeps chucks paintings different and new. "putting rocks in my shoes" is how he keeps himself busy.

My favorite art in the story Chuck Close up Close is abstract for the following reasons. First, there is no certain way it is suppose to look and it is very colorful. Second, many great artists’ use this kind of art like Pablo Picaso, who is a very well renowned artist. Third, abstract art is interesting because there is no end to it, and you can make something look opposite of what it really looks like. In conclusion, abstract art is different and unusual, but that is what I like about.

“Putting rocks in my shoes” means making obstacles for yourself. Chuck Close demonstrated putting rocks in his shoes by painting it three times. He says, “The greatest enemy for an artist is ease … repeating yourself once you get good at it.” I think the idea of rocks in my shoes is a good idea because it keeps you challenged

To me putting rocks in my shoes means to make obstacles in life to challenge yourself. For example if you don’t challenge yourself on a daily bases, when a challenge comes you won’t be prepared. Chuck Close understood this and was prepared when disaster struck. In my opinion I think Chuck was able to paint after the event because he was prepared. As you can see putting rocks in your shoes makes a big difference in your life.
