Friend or Foe: Moctezuma’s Choice

Why did Moctezuma welcome Cortes and his men instead of destroying him? That’s the question that we all want to know the answer to and it has a multitude of good answers. However, the main reason that historians think that he welcomed them is that Moctezuma was extremely religious and he thought that Cortes was his god coming to reclaim his throne. He may have thought this because this was the year that the return of the gods was predicted to come back in by the Aztec calendar. Moreover, things were going wrong in nature and Moctezuma, as a leader, was under a lot of pressure to make his people think that he is doing something to help them. Likewise, by Quetzalcoatl coming back some of the responsibility and pressure would be shifted from his shoulders, to Quetzalcoatl’s. I also believe that Moctezuma was scared that he would make the wrong decision so he let his religious beliefs get in the way of his insecurities. However, no matter how much Moctezuma wanted to make the right choice he didn’t and those are several very valid reasons for why he did what he did. All in all, his decision resulted in the downfall of the most powerful culture of that time period.

Welcoming the Strangers

Why did Moctezuma decide to welcome the strangers as friends rather than treat them as enemies?

There is one very important reason why Moctezuma let the strangers become friends. “Quetzalcoatl has appeared!” Moctezuma thought. The ruler believed that the strangers was the great god returning to claim his throne. Moctezuma believed that the signs were true; the fire across the sky was he. Quetzalcoatl promised to come back, and now was the predicted year of his return. It all completely added up to Moctezuma, the so-called “stranger” was the god himself. It was very sad to see the ruler of the Aztecs go against the advice of his chiefs, and allow the welcoming of the Spaniards. Just because of his belief, he was selfish to his men and let down everybody. Most of the Aztec people died because of Moctezuma’s selfishness and his belief of the god returning.

Moctezuma's decision
I think the reason Moctezuma chose the strangers to be welcome are because he thought that if anything happened he had a stronger army. The second reason is because he thought he was the the returning god. He didnt think they meant any harm. The third reason is because he knew he was stronger that cortes. But then a few years later was killed because he made the worst disicion of his life.

The Bad Decision

Why did Montezuma let Cortes into his empire as a guest? Well by coincidence, Quetzalcoatl, one of their gods, was suppose to return. When Cortes arrived he thought it was Quetzalcoatl come to take his throne. He thought there were signs that showed the gods were angry. He saw something very bright streak across the night sky, which we know now, is a comet. These are the reasons he let Cortes into his empire as a guest.

Why Moctezuma,Why?

Why did Moctezuma decide to welcome the strangers as friends rather than treat them as enemies? First, he thought that Cortes was his god returning instead of Quetzalcoatl. Second, he didn’t think that Cortes and his army meant any harm. Lastly, he was confused because they were violent and he was sure that Quetzalcoatl was not, but either way, he still let them in. In conclusion, I think that Moctezuma made a terrible decision because he didn’t listen to his chief and Cortés conquered him.

Friend or Enemies
Question: Why did Moctezuma welcome instead of destroying him?

Enemies or Friends

I think that Moctezuma’s decision was a life threatening decision because of these reasons. One reason is that he welcomed Cortez and thought he was a good person, but he was a very bad person. Also, he gave Cortez goods and treats. Finally, Moctezuma thought it he was a rising king because their ships and weapons made him believe that. In conclusion I think that Moctezuma made a bad decision.

"are they enemies, or friends"

Moctezuma made the biggest mistake when he let the Spanish into Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztecs. One of the reasons was by not listening to his elders when they told him not to. Also, Moctezuma thought these strange happenings were a sign of his god coming, and Cortes arrived in the year his returning god was supposed to come back and reclaim his throne. Lastly, the way they looked, “Covered in metal, there faces were covered in hair, and when they sat on there ‘Deer’ they were as tall as there roofs." He thought they were his god, that played a big religous problem. This is why and how Moctezuma made the worst decisions ever.

Moctezuma’s bad decision

Moctezuma didn’t think they would try to kill him and his culture, but he didn’t listen to his chiefs advice. Moctezuma thought Cortes was a god returning to his throne. Moctezuma knew that the year was supposed to be that year that the god comes back. Moctezuma didn’t think they were gonna kill him. Moctezuma didn’t know what they had against his people and why they wanted to fight them.

The Biggest Mistake

Moctezuma II made the biggest mistake of his life. Moctezuma was an Aztec leader in 1520. He was expecting a god named Quetzalcacoatl to return on the year that Cortés arrived. When the greeting party returned frightened, the head chiefs were uneasy. But Moctezuma welcomed them as friends. In about a year, Cortés attacked the Aztecs during a festival, were Moctezuma died during the fighting.

Many of us know the mistake when Montezuma went against the advice of his chiefs and left the city in ruins. He thought that a Spanish explorer named Hernan Cortez was a god coming back from the water because the legend said he was coming back this year. It turn out that Cortez wanted to fight for gold. Montezuma welcomed Cortez and Cortez started to fight in a festive that the Aztecs were celebrating. The white men that came gave the Aztecs a disease called Small Box and Cortez came and over powered the Aztecs and won the battle. In conclusion, Montezuma didn’t realize Cortez was a man looking for money and not the god.

Extra Curricular Essay

Sacrifices

In the Aztec culture they had the practice of human sacrifices. Even thought the most discussed sacrifices were the human sacrifices, there were many other types of sacrifices. The reason the Aztecs believed that they most sacrifices people was because they felt they owed a debt to the gods. The Aztecs had the ritual sacrifice every month, there were eighteen months in the Aztec year. For you people that aren’t good at math, this meant they had about eighteen sacrifices a year. In the Aztecs Sacrifices they would paint the body of the victim. Then they would put the victim a table where they would cut their heart out and hold it up to the sun. Finally, they would throw the body off the edge of the temple stairs. This is one of the examples of the bloodthirsty side of the Aztec people.

The End Of The Aztecs

Why did Moctezuma become friends with Cortez?

The first reason he became friends with Cortez is because they thought he was a god.
The second reason is that this year was the expected year for a god to return.
The third reason is that the Aztecs had never seen guns before and were scared.
The fourth reason is that ‘they were carried around on huge deer’ that made them as tall as buildings.
The fifth reason is that they have hair that only comes down to their ears.

Moctezuma made a bad descion because later they were having a festival and the Spanish attacked them later they were wiped out by small pocks and he went against the advice of his gods and advisors.

The decisions Moctezuma II made were what brought the Aztec Empire to its knees, but there are reasons why he made these decisions. Below are the reasons he chose to allow the Spaniards into their capital as friends. First, Moctezuma thought the Spaniards were gods because he had never been exposed to people with white skin. Second, it was the predicted year for the god Quetzalcoatl to return to the throne. Lastly, He was intimidated by the metal armor, weapons, and hat they were wearing. In Conclusion Moctezuma II made many mistake those in which led to the down fall of the powerful Aztec army.

31 Did not see it happen

The reason that Montezuma made a dumb decision these are the reasons why. The first reason is, he thought Cortes was the Quetzaloatl and came back to take the throne. The second reason is, He thought they would not attack the Aztecs so he let him bye. The third thing is, He did no know that the small groups would threaten all the Aztecs. The forth thing is they were confused by the gun shots.

Friends or War?

Moctezuma welcomed the strangers as friends because he thought that Cortez was the god Quetezcoatl, returning for the throne. That mistake ruined his entire empire. He sent messengers to give Cortez gifts of gold and other precious stones. Cortez asked, “Is this all you have brought?” For some reason one of Cortez’s men shot off a gun and the messengers fainted. After they were revived they went back to Moctezuma. At that point Moctezuma had a choice. He could have killed the strange whit people or befriend them. His chiefs said not to but Moctezuma had a strong religion for the god Quetezcoatl. He did listen a little bit though. He gave the Spaniards more gifts trying to make them leave. This did the opposite: Cortez took Moctezuma as a hostage hoping for a large amount of random money which lead to the war. After the Spaniards left the Aztecs the Aztecs had been attacked by a disease called small pox. A few years later the Spaniards came back and destroyed the weakened empire the once most powerful empire: The Aztecs

Reasons for Moctezuma’s Bad Decision

Moctezuma made his decision to welcome the foreigners for many reasons; most of them were because this was the predicted year Quetzalcoatl was going to return. Also, Moctezuma figured something was going wrong with the gods because the marsh that surrounded the Capital City Boiled up and disappeared, Moctezuma has never seen this before. Another example of something going wrong with the gods is that there were a lot of storms. Second, Moctezuma was confused that the Spaniards weren’t violent when they met the Aztecs. Finally, Moctezuma thought the boats were giant deer and that the metal was from above. In conclusion, There is a lot of reasons that Moctezuma chose to welcome the Foreign people!

Moctezuma’s Bad Decision

Why did Moctezuma welcome Cort`es and his soldiers, instead of destroying them? Moctezuma welcomed Cort`es because he thought that Cort`es was the returning god Quetzalcdatal, from the fire he blew up in the sky. Another reason is that he didn’t think that these strangers meant any harm, so he sent his men there to them and they came back telling him all these horrible things about these strangers. But Moctezuma didn’t do any thing about it even though his army could kill Cort`es men in five minutes!

The reason Moctezuma made that stupid decision because of these reasons. He welcomed them because of there armor. He also welcomed them because of the big gun. Plus because he thought he was the returning god Quetzalcoatl. Cortez also gave everybody small pox witch killed thousands of people. Giving Moctezuma the courage to welcome Cortez and his army.

Why didn’t he just kill them?

Moctezuma welcomed Cortez because he thought he was a returning god Quetzalcoatl coming to claim his throne. First, he welcomed the disgusting, life killing, disease bringing Cortez. They also had guns that scared the messengers. They had the metal armor. They had all of this other things that had they have never seen before. They had a disease called small pox which killed all of the Aztec’s. These are some of the reasons that Moctezuma welcomed Cortez instead of killing them which he should have done in the first place.

Hernan Cortes
Hernan Cortes was born in Spain in 1845. He was described as a sick child (which is not how he sounds like when he took over Mexico) with a taste for trouble. His parents wanted him to have a legal career and he went he one of Spain’s greatest law schools. However, he probably used this knowledge of the law to make sure that he didn’t do anything illegal when he attacked the Aztecs. He planned to go to America on a voyage but he got sick and stopped in Cuba. He lived there while he recovered then got the governer’s support for another expedition. As we know the governor withdrew his official support but he left anyway. The way he reacted when the Aztecs showered him with gifts shows that he was used to being spoiled. He showed very cruel methods of treachery and deceit when he accepted the Aztecs hospitality then attacked them during a festival. He didn’t even seem to care that he was killing thousands of people as long as he got his gold. He led many trips to Baja California and on his second return he ran up to an emperors carriage and when he was asked who he was he replied, “I’m the man who gave you more provinces than your ancestors left you cities.” This display of behavior shows the kind of person he was. He died at the age of 62 heavily in debt but since he lead so many successful voyages he was buried in the mausoleum of the Duke of Medina but his body was moved several times because as time passed and more Dukes died they took up space in the tomb so his body, the one of a bitter old explorer was moved to many different tombs. Like many famous voyagers, he died unhappy.

Fear and Fate

It was early morning in the year 1519 and all the Aztec people were just rising with the sun. It had been another long night of fire shooting across the sky. It was time. Moctezuma knew that the gods were restless and it was the year that the great Quetzalcoatl was coming to claim his throne. When was he coming? What should happen should he come?

“Moctezuma! Moctezuma, strange people have arrived on floating serpents bigger than anyone has ever seen. They ride on deer that make them stand taller than the sun!” his chiefs said to him. Moctezuma thought and thought, “When did they arrive? Where did they come from? How did they find us?” Moctezuma inquired. “They came over the horizon with the sun. We did not see them find us, we just saw them arrive,” his servants replied.

“Give Quetzalcoatl these gifts of welcome and tell him that I have kept the empire in great shape. Tell him we welcome him as our leader,” said Moctezuma. The chiefs hurried away to welcome their god as their leader. Moctezuma paced back and forth, waiting for Quetzalcoatl to throw apart the mighty doors and step inside with footsteps louder than a rhino.

When the chiefs came back they were pale and rings of iron were chained to their hands and feet. “Moctezuma, they have armies and want to go to war we can not welcome them! You must understand, when we left we did not have iron around our wrists and ankles! They treated us like slaves!” said the chiefs. Moctezuma did not know what to do, but he knew the gods were restless and Quetzalcoatl was to return this year. “We will welcome them and that is my final word,” Moctezuma said.

The next day Cortes and his army invaded and fought. They brought diseases that wiped out the entire Aztec empire. They fought for gold and land, and many others died fighting. Including Moctezuma.

Aztec's Cultures
Moctezuma decide to welcome Henan Cortes instead of killing him right away. He invited him in because he thought that he was a god named, Tenochtitlan. Moctezuma made an idiotic decision to welcome Henan Cortes because he killed all of the Aztecs during a festival and left the city in ruins. Moctezuma died during the fighting and a thousand of Aztecs people died from Cortez and from a disease called smallpox a disease the Europeans brought. In conclusion, Moctezuma by welcoming the unexpected visitors that wiped out the Aztecs culture.

Moctezuma and his Horrifying Decision
When Mocteuma welcomed Cortes and his crew onto their land, they came, smallpox and all, and left the ancient culture shattered. Throughout the year, there had been numerous happenings. The lake surrounding Tenochtitlan had started bubbling over like a pot of boiling water atop a stove. This was also the year, according to the ancient prophecy that Quetzalcoatl was to come back to reclaim his throne. When he heard news of the strange men with metal clothing and light skin, he knew it had to be Quetzalcoatl. He then sent his men to bring the make tributes to the unusual strangers. The men he sent returned in a horrified, telling him about the terrifying weapons that could easily shatter a tree in one blow. That night Moctezuma suffered of sleep loss, replaying the days events over and over in his head. The next morning, sleep deprived and deep in thought, he beckoned the explorer to come on to their land, figuring that no one could defeat their impregnably strong army. Well, that was a day of much blood shed for the for both sides. Additionally, this was a very asinine move on Moctezuma’s part because he proved himself to be an unexpectedly ignorant leader, killing thousands of people and sweeping away a mind-blowing culture as if simply cobwebs in a long forgotten corner.

Moctezuma made a bad decision when he allowed the visitors into his city for the following reasons. He thought Cortes was the god Quetzacoatl, from the Aztec’s prophesy. One reason he thought this was his soldiers saw giant deer (horses) and boats that looked like huge moving mountains. Also it was the year of the return of Quetzacoatl based on the Aztec calendar. For these reasons Moctezuma’s decision was not so bright.

2/4/10 Moctezuma

I think that Moctezuma made a stupid decision because when he saw the strangers he didn’t know about them but they thought he was a god just came because he came the same time. And when he came they bowed to him and he didn’t know him a t all like what is that. And after that they served him, and he invites then to be his friends rather being his enemies. I think that Cortez gets mad because he has enemies and he doesn’t have his salves anymore. In conclusion I wish that this story was longer that we could listen to this and understand it more.

A Mistake Taken
Why do you think that Moctezuma went against his chiefs and let Cortez into his city? One reason could be that they wore heavy armor and metal and rode what the Aztecs thought were “giant deer.” Or maybe he had the idea that Cortez was a god? This is not a bad thought because they had come the same year that the ancient Aztec god was supposed to return that same year. Another idea is that even if Moctezuma had been wrong about Cortez (which he was) he could still defeat him with his vast army if not for the small pox that had wiped out many of the Aztec’s people and made them vulnerable to Cortez’s second attack. In my opinion, what Moctezuma had done was worse than Cortez because his chiefs had warned him but he didn’t listen and he put all of his peoples lives in danger.

Moctezuma

There are two main reasons why he welcomed Cortez and his troops. First he thought that they would be friendly because had never seen them. And second he thought that he was a god. But the chiefs said it looked sketchy and he didn’t listen and guess what he died. It was his fault that his army died.he thoght that they would be friendly but he should hav listened to his chiefs 28
